Sailing
As Scotland’s newest sailing club, we like to think we are friendly and enthusiastic – irrespective of experience you will be welcomed here.
In the 2 years of our existence, we have built up a diverse and inclusive dinghy fleet; from Optimists to Hurricane catamarans and most things in between if you’ve got it you can sail it here at Portobello. We have around 25 sailing dinghies in our compound including some club-owned Toppers and an Enterprise which are available for members to use. We still have plenty of room for new boats and if you’d like to store a boat with us the please click here.
We race most Sunday afternoons over the season. In common with our overall philosophy, everyone is welcome to enter – we race off a Portsmouth Yardstick handicap system and members of all ages (adults and children) and ranges of experience take part. We keep the rules as simple as possible, have prizes for the best (and the keenest!) sailors over the season and always have a beer or two in the Espy at the end of a race. If you’d like to race with us this season then please send an email with your boat class and names and ages of your crew tojkinsley@sailporty.org.uk
The weekends we’re not racing it’s because we’re running lessons instead. We think it’s important to invest in our youngsters (we’ve given lessons to over 200 local Portobello children already in our first two seasons) and this season we will be running Kids Stage 2 and 3 courses out of Portobello. We’ve also had a lot of interest in Adult Courses and will also be running Adult Level 1 and 2 courses this summer. If you’d like to enrol on any of our courses details are here
Finally, if after reading this you’re enthused by the idea of helping out in any way, we are always looking for volunteers. We have paid for a number of our members to undertake the enormously fun Powerboat Level 2 course at Port Edgar over the last 2 years so that they can help out with our rescue boat rota. If you’re interested in that, or helping out in any other way, please email jkinsley@sailporty.org.uk
